Meet the Maker

Miel des Fleurs

Westport, Ontario

It begins with the bees.

Miel des Fleurs is a small, woman-owned apiary founded and tended by Master Beekeeper ANNELLE LALONDE.

What began in 2022 with just two hives has grown organically into 30 colonies, surrounded by forests, wildflowers, and the changing blooms of Westport, Ontario.

For Annelle, beekeeping is rooted in careful observation, continual learning, and respect for the natural rhythms of the hive. “For me, beekeeping is as much about the bees as it is about the honey.”

Her fascination with honey bee biology led her to earn her Master Beekeeper accreditation through Cornell University, and that knowledge shapes everything from how the colonies are cared for to when honey is harvested.

The goal is not simply to produce more honey, but to maintain strong, healthy colonies while working with the bees and the season.

The Process

SHAPED BY THE SEASON

The bees forage across the surrounding landscape, gathering nectar from whatever is in bloom.

The result is wildflower honey whose flavour, colour, and character can subtly change from one harvest to the next.

Each jar carries something of the landscape and season it came from.

The honey is harvested in small batches and kept raw and unpasteurized, preserving it as close as possible to the way the bees created it. From hive to jar, the process remains deliberately hands-on.

NOTHING WASTED

Even the beeswax collected during the honey harvest finds another life.

Annelle carefully cleans and filters the beautiful wax cappings before hand-pouring them into candles in small batches — from preparing the moulds and setting the wicks to melting, filtering, and pouring the wax.

Natural beeswax has a character all its own: a warm golden colour, a subtle honeyed scent, and small variations that make every candle a little different.

Many of Annelle’s candle forms take their inspiration from flowers, the garden, the harvest and the seasons — a natural continuation of the landscape from which the wax came.

Nothing the bees create is taken for granted.

Why We Chose It

We were drawn to Annelle’s thoughtful approach to beekeeping, her respect for the natural rhythms of the hive, and the way each harvest remains so closely connected to the landscape it comes from.

There is something especially beautiful to us about products that carry a sense of place — the flowers, the bees, the weather, and the season all becoming part of what eventually finds its way into our homes.

Her honey and beeswax candles felt like a natural fit for Bloomfields, and a fitting first story for Meet the Maker.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of the story is where it begins: bees returning home on a warm summer afternoon, carrying nectar and pollen gathered from the surrounding landscape.

What eventually becomes a jar of honey or a beeswax candle begins there — one flower and one bee at a time.

Made with care. Shaped by the season.
